deviantGALLERY: Update [v0.4]

Wed Jul 27, 2005, 11:33 AM
deviantGALLERY

Click here for details of the latest versions of deviantGALLERY.

deviantGallery is a replacement for the standard deviantart gallery browser. (For individual galleries like http://arphire.deviantart.com/gallery/, not the main "Browse" section). It uses javascript to move back and forward through a gallery rather than reloading the page each time, and dynamically loads the thumbnails as required. This means it's significantly faster than the normal method.

So What?

Well, since it's still in the beta stages, and no-one really knows about it yet, it would be a great help if you were to:

  • Spread the word about it, with a link to this journal entry.

  • If you're using Mozilla Firefox, and you have the Greasemonkey extension installed, you can help me by tring it out and letting me know what you think.

  • (Also, bug reports would be most helpful! :))

OK, cool! What do I have to do?

Go here to download a copy (so long as you are a Firefox/Greasemonkey user). Then go to your favourite deviant's gallery and try it out!

If you like, you can send me a note to say that you've tried it, say if you liked it, give me suggestions, opinions, etc etc.

Brilliant, I'm there!

OK just hang on two seconds, OK? There's a couple of things you ought to know first, so I don't get lots of reports of things that aren't really bugs:

  • It may take a little longer to load than you're accustomed to. This is because you effectively have to load the page twice. After that, it will be fast, trust me! :D

Updates

Version 0.3.1 fixes a few of the bugs noticed by the beta testers.
Version 0.3.2 fixes a few more bugs. :P
Version 0.4 adds the ability to select how many deviations are visible per page.

Stamp

Yeah, I know it's rubbish :P but since it's the thing at the moment here's my feeble attempt:

You're welcome to use it to link to this journal :)

Oh, you see monsters?

Cool! I have been using it for the past couple of days now and I can't find anything wrong with it at all. Seems like a very stable Greasemonkey script. Like the way everything integrates really nicely and it looks very much like the rest of dA, which is brilliant.

Love it, great work. :)

Like the stamp, too. Yoink!

Cheers for your support :D

The stamp kinda annoys me 'cause the words are all fuzzy. Probably the effect of having long words in it :hmm:
And the generally dull deviantart colour :giggle:

Any suggestions on anything?
:iconbrainwipe:
Your welcome! Thanks for the script. :)

With that many words on your stamp, it's going to be difficult to make them clear. I agree that the neutral dA skin is probably not helping. Perhaps you could put a dark shadow on it - quite pronounced, might pull it out of the background. Alternatively, perhaps use the blue gradient that you use for your avatar. Being a stamp, I think people will guess it is for dA.

I can't think of any additional features for it just now but I'll certainly give it some thought. I think the additional loads times aren't too much of a problem but might put the casual user off.

Yeah, I put shadows behind the words, because otherwise you just can't read them at all.
(I was finding the notion of "features" for a stamp quite hilarious 'till I realised you were talking about the script!)

I've actually been quite surprised at how quickly it loads now. Before the latest version it redefined the meaning of slow =p. But it's a shame because I'm not sure if it can be speeded up any more.

If you could select say 6 deviations per page for personal galleries and 120 for site browsing that would be an immense speedup.
:iconcherriebomb:
I downloaded it, and checked out my gallery. Animated gifs don't show up. Otherwise, very cool. Good job :)
:iconarphire:
You're right. I've seen that before but didn't know that it was animated gifs, I just thought the tn server was going wrong! Thanks for the report, I'll look into it. :)
:iconrotane:
Excellent script, really excellent!

One thing I thought about when viewing in 300 (Preview)-mode: how about making it 2 columns? (if that's possible at all.) I mean, 300 pixel on a 1280 (or 1024) screen-res gives you a lot of grey around it ;)
[Yea right, I did modify the script to display more than one preview-image at the same time]

Another thing: It'd be nice to have a setting somewhere where I can set the default thumb-size to 150 (large thumbs) and/or always sort by top-favs e.g.

Other than that: very good work, keep it up! You future plans look great as well
